You never know what you're going to find out in the grass behind Dean's place. They'd been working on Baby before all Sam's stuff and a little bit during when there was nothing else to do but wait. Sanding her rust off, stripping the body back to bare metal. Carefully, painstakingly attempting to undo the damage of being left to rot. It's sort of amazing Dean's letting him touch the car from a maintenance perspective but this time it's different.
Sam thinks Baby is something of an allegory for his brother. That working on her means Dean is trying to find his way back from those five years of darkness. Trying to heal, if only a little bit, and Sam is allowed to help. He wants to. Desperately. If that means sanding rust and grinding out bolts then so be it.
They've got her covered with a tarp around back, which is where he finds his older self. The sandy, dried up prairie is awful but the heat is kind of nice.
"Hey," announcing himself when he gets into close earshot, arriving at Sam's side and blocking out the sun with his body. The rustling of a bag, the snap and hiss of something carbonated being opened. Gingerale, as promised, offered as he takes stock of his (brother's?) Injuries.

Hey, stick to what you're best at, right?
Are you in bed or the basement?

Threatened to be put in basement.
Snuck out to an old rusty lawn chair.
When was our last tetanus shot?

1997 Truman High vaccination day. How lucky are you feeling?

I'd like to see tetanus try.

Could you imagine. Everything we've been through and it's tetanus that finishes the job. So lame.

There are worse ways to go.
Don't step on any nails out there.
-> Action
I'll try to restrain myself.
